The "usefulness" of Melamine tableware does not hold unconditionally. Its product advantages—light weight, shatter resistance, heat retention, and rich colors—are fully amplified in specific scenarios, while in others they must give way cautiously. Clarifying these application boundaries is more practically meaningful than talking about "advantages" in general terms.
Commercial Foodservice: A Rational Choice Where Efficiency Comes First
In commercial scenarios such as canteens, fast-food chains, and hotel buffets, the core value of melamine tableware lies in reducing breakage and improving turnover efficiency. According to materials from Kepu China, melamine tableware is lightweight and shatter-resistant, making it particularly suitable for scenarios such as student dormitories and outdoor picnics, greatly reducing breakage and safety risks; at the same time, its bright colors and diverse shapes make it commonly used in fast-food restaurants, canteens, and other settings that require rapid sorting. Consumer guidance from the China National Institute of Standardization also confirms that melamine tableware is widely used in schools, kindergartens, and institutional canteens, as well as in restaurants, eateries, fast-food outlets, and snack shops.
In terms of material properties, the network structure of melamine resin gives it better impact resistance than ceramics and glass, and its lower thermal conductivity means it does not burn the hands when holding hot food. For group catering scenarios that require large-scale portioning and collection, these physical properties translate directly into operational efficiency.

Children's Tableware: Demand Matching and Coexisting Risks
Melamine tableware has high penetration in children's dining. The China National Institute of Standardization explicitly notes that "many parents use it as children's tableware." The reasons are not hard to understand: shatter resistance suits young children's usage habits, bright colors and cartoon shapes appeal to children, and the lightweight material facilitates self-feeding.
However, this application scenario has the strictest requirements for product compliance. Kepu China warns that inferior imitation porcelain bowls may use urea-formaldehyde resin to partially or wholly replace melamine resin, and urea-formaldehyde resin releases formaldehyde, endangering health. Guidance from the China National Institute of Standardization further explains that products marked with UF (urea-formaldehyde resin) must not hold food intended for direct consumption; some enterprises use urea-formaldehyde resin or mixed materials to replace melamine resin in order to reduce costs, and such tableware has poor high-temperature stability and is prone to decomposing and releasing formaldehyde and melamine monomers during prolonged contact with acidic or oily foods. Parents should look for the "MF" marking when purchasing and give preference to tableware with no pattern or a light color on the interior, to reduce the risk of heavy metal migration.
Outdoor and Portable Scenarios: The Natural Advantage of Light Weight
The lightweight nature of melamine tableware constitutes a clear application rationale in outdoor scenarios. The aforementioned Kepu China article lists "outdoor picnics" as a typical applicable scenario for the lightweight and shatter-resistant advantages. Compared with ceramic or glass tableware, melamine products present virtually no risk of breakage during backpack transport and outdoor use, while still providing a dining experience close to that of porcelain.
Clear Prohibited Uses
The application boundaries of melamine tableware are equally clear. According to consumer guidance from the China National Institute of Standardization, melamine tableware must not be used for microwave heating, should not hold high-temperature foods or acidic, oily, or alkaline foods for prolonged periods, and is not recommended for high-temperature steaming or boiling disinfection; steel wool should not be used for cleaning, to avoid damaging the surface protective film. Kepu China further lists specific prohibitions: holding scalding hot oily soup, microwave heating, direct open-flame heating, scrubbing with steel wool, and prolonged holding of strongly acidic liquids are all dangerous operations.
These restrictions mean that the application logic of melamine tableware is scenario fit rather than all-purpose replacement. In scenarios such as canteen portioning, children's daily dining, and outdoor carrying, its advantages are tangible; in scenarios such as high-temperature cooking and long-term storage of acidic foods, it should give way to glass, ceramics, or stainless steel.
For buyers and users, the criteria for judging the value of melamine tableware are not complicated: look for the MF marking, use it within the appropriate temperature and food range, and replace it promptly when the surface shows obvious wear or discoloration. When the scenario is right, the product advantages can hold.
